Course Description
AMTA offers two variations of PDIC Instructor Training.
- Provincially licensed PDIC instructor with the province of Alberta (authorization to issue 3-demerit reduction certificates)
- PDIC instructor without becoming licensed with the province (no three-demerit reduction certificates can be issued, which is not an issue for drivers licensed in provinces other than Alberta).
To become a provincially licensed instructor:
The Professional Driver Improvement Course (PDIC) Instructor Training Course is a six-day course of advanced driver education designed to certify successful candidates as Alberta Transportation licensed PDIC instructors.
This will enable them to teach the AMTA’s PDIC program for their employer and provide both a PDIC Certificate and a Notice of Driver Education Course Completion, which enables drivers with an Alberta license to remove up to three demerit points from their driving record. A PDIC course can be taken once every two years. Long Combination Vehicle Drivers are required to take a PDIC course once every 48 months.
Pre-requisites:
- Valid Alberta license, with a minimum of 36 months Class 1 commercial driving experience (verified)
- Fewer than seven demerit points (provide commercial abstract)
- No driver license suspension within the previous two years
- No Criminal Code driver license cancelation or suspension previous five years
- Has signed the AMTA instructor Code of Conduct
Delivery Format
Delivery time: Six days (45 hours)
The first two days are in the AMTA’s classrooms and the next four days consist of two co-teach sessions and two observations with the AMTA’s senior instructor (with students provided by the instructor candidate).
Instructor licensing: Upon successful completion, the AMTA senior instructor will provide the documentation necessary for the PDIC instructor candidate to apply for an instructor’s license with Alberta Transportation.
Instructors will require four additional monitoring sessions in the first twelve months, then bi-annually thereafter.
Tuition: $4,000 + GST (no member discount available)
To become a PDIC instructor, without provincial licensing:
The non-DEES (formerly non-DPLS) Professional Driver Improvement Course (PDIC) Instructor Training Course is advanced driver education designed to certify successful candidates as AMTA certified, non-DEES PDIC instructors. This will enable them to teach the AMTA’s non-DEES PDIC program for their employer and provide a PDIC Certificate.
Long Combination Vehicle (LCV) Drivers are required to take a PDIC course once every 48 months. This does not allow for three-demerit reduction certificates. However, if your drivers require PDIC for LCV or are from out of province, becoming a non-DEES PDIC instructor might be a good option.
Delivery format
Delivery time: Four days (30 hours)
The first two days are in the AMTA’s classrooms, with the next two days consisting of one co-teach session and one observation with the AMTA’s senior instructor (students need to be provided by the instructor candidate).
