The Professional Driver Improvement Course (PDIC): Instructor Training Course, is a six-day course of advanced, driver education designed to certify successful participants as Alberta Transportation (AT) licensed PDIC instructors. This course is scheduled on an as-needed basis.
Training is completed with the information required to successfully manage a student’s progression through the course, to completion. Once certified, participants will be able to book classes, register students, and instruct AMTA’s PDIC training program – all through the ‘instructor dashboard’ in the AMTA’s Learning Management System (LMS).
The course enables successful graduates to teach AMTA’s PDIC program for their employer, and to provide both a PDIC Certificate and a Notice of Driver Education Course Completion. The combination of these two achievements permit drivers with an Alberta license to remove up to three demerits from their driving record. A PDIC course can be taken once every two years; however, Long Combination Vehicle (LCV) drivers are required to take a PDIC course once every 48 months.
Pre-requisites for interested candidates:
- Has taken an AMTA PDIC course within the previous 24 months
- A minimum of 36 months Class 1 commercial driving experience (verified)
- Fewer than 7 demerit points (provide commercial abstract)
- No driver licence suspension that expired within 2 years
- No Criminal Code driver license cancelation or suspension previous 5 years
- Has signed the AMTA instructor Code of Conduct
PDIC Instructor Training is beneficial to carriers with large fleets (multiple drivers) so that PDIC training can be completed in-house.
Delivery Time: Six days (45 hours)
In-person Classroom and practical: The first two days are taught in the classroom with the remaining four days consisting of practical environments where learners participate in two co-teach sessions and two observation sessions with AMTA’s senior instructor.
The first two days are in the AMTA’s classrooms and the next four days consist of two co-teach sessions and two observations with the AMTA’s senior instructor.
Should they be required, distance learning courses would be facilitated in real-time by a qualified AMTA instructor and participants access the course and materials via an online conferencing tool (presently, Microsoft Teams) using a computer or device equipped with sound and video (camera) capabilities.
You will complete the training with the information you require to successfully manage a student’s progression through the course and to completion. Once certified, instructors will be able to book classes, register students, and instruct the AMTA’s PDIC training program, all through the instructor dashboard in the AMTA’s Learning Management System. This will allow you to issue certificates of completion.
The AMTA will provide a Notice of Driver Education Course Completion that can be applied to the student’s license at Alberta’s registries, allowing up to 3 demerits to be removed from the driver’s record (once every 2 years).
